Earlier today a lady called my law office and wanted to know why Kentucky School Bus drivers are not stopped by the police and cited for driving her children in school buses without seat belts. The lady wanted to know why occupants of cars had to wear seat belts but her children do not if on a school bus. After doing a brief (unscientific) poll, I learned that few local buses had seat belts for the passengers, but do have seat belts for the drivers.
The lady called in response to my January 4, 2007 post about seat belts. In that post, I discussed that in Kentucky, it is a violation of the law if you do not wear your seat belt after January 1, 2007. Under the new law, police officers can pull over and ticket motorists simply for not wearing seat belts, even if they have committed no other violations. The new law imposes a $25 fine for anyone caught not wearing a seat belt in a vehicle, including passengers.
On January 29, 2007, USA Today ran a story about how states are taking affirmative action to force drivers to use seat belts, and how they can save lives.
I would welcome comments from readers as to their thoughts on this subject.

Why is it that Drivers have to wear their seat belts, but Motorcyclists do not have to wear crash helmets?
Makes no sense to me...
